The lunatic war on drag shows

This baroque and far from hinged argument that the religious beliefs of the president of a public university should trump the First Amendment rights of students who want to perform a drag show as a fundraiser is where the Republican party is today:
WTAMU President Walter Wendler says there’s “No Such Thing [as a] Harmless Drag Show” in a stunning statement vowing to violate the First Amendment if needed to censor a student-run drag show raising money for The Trevor Project. https://t.co/lhJ02ZaiVS pic.twitter.com/FFWmgGe2o4— Alex Morey (@1AMorey) March 21, 2023
A Texas Republican pretending to oppose misogyny is a remarkable thing, like two kids in a suit trying to impersonate an adult.
Needless to say, this total crackpot isn’t any kind of outlier — the Ahmari tendency in reactionary politics has become a dominant strain, most famously in the most likely runner-up to Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination. And we should be clear that “protecting children” has never been what this is about — the Republican Party does not remotely accept LGBTQ+ people as equal citizens, and it will get worse before it gets better.
