This is…not great:

Hopefully nothing more will come from this but I’m not entirely reassured.

It’s still kind of surreal that the Republican candidate in 2020 is less than four years younger, and the runner-up for the Democratic nomination was even older (and had a heart attack during the primary process!) I don’t really have a solution here — not only could we not go back to the elite-controlled primary process even if we wanted to, the actual track record of party elites picking presidential candidates is actually very spotty. And I also understand the risk aversion of the Democratic Party given that there’s no consensus alternative to Biden — we’re in a weird period of political time where national and swing state elections are so competitive that candidate quality matters more than ever even though there are fewer swing voters than there used to be, and Biden has proven he can win. But this really is a job better suited to a younger person, and the possibility of a severe heath issue for Biden should be be elected to a second term is higher than one would like.
