The Fantasies of Elite Liberals
Thomas Edsall published a piece of utter nonsense last week about liberals needing to be nicer to conservatives. After all, can’t we all just get along. He goes over a bunch of research that tried to “get us to hate each other less.” Even Edsall can’t really find that much optimism here, but the deep desire of elite Beltway liberals and their allies in certain parts of academia to go back to a nostalgic past where we could all just get along is so frustrating. I hate to tell Edsall and others here, but the problem of hate is not equally spread. Liberals mostly don’t have conservatives, though they are learning how to hate more every day and for good reason. It’s that the far right wants liberals literally dead and the entire Republican Party is totally cool with that on one level or another. It’s not liberals shooting up conservative rallies like Kyle Rittenhouse or driving cars into batches of right-wingers like happened in Charlottesville. Joe Biden isn’t saying there are good people on both sides. Left wing media is not fetishizing the death of conservatives. These kinds of columns just exist in a total fantasy land that misses the entire point of what is going on in America.
