OTOH, despite the massive differences in the two situations, this was sloppy and stupid and extremely unhelpful.

I watched Biden’s press conference addressing this, and another thing that may not be helpful — on the other hand it might, see below — is to pretend that Biden’s public speaking hasn’t become a problem. Yes I know he’s battled a stutter for his entire life, but now he sounds slow and halting: he has considerable difficulty simply reading a prepared statement without numerous verbal stumbles.

As to what can be done about the latter issue I suppose the answer is nothing, so perhaps the most prudent political course is to deny it’s an issue after all.
