Six and counting
Questions:
(1) Obviously what’s going on now is purely performative, but what is the point of the performance exactly? The 20 GOP no votes on McCarthy aren’t going to change, or at least not enough of them are going to change to get him over the finish line. This means McCarthy’s only hope is some sort of deal with the Democrats, but the nature of the contemporary GOP rough beast is that such a deal is totally impossible, at least not until things get much, much worse.
(2) Relatedly, what are the rules to adjourn that day’s session? Can the 20 radical reactionaries plus the Dems block that from happening?
(3) The Democrats really need to hang tough here and force the GOP to come crawling with major concessions, in return for throwing them a lifeline instead of an anvil.
(4) A sobering reminder that the Insane Clown Posse party got three million more votes in the collective elections for the House in November. Yes there were a bunch of non-competitive elections that make that figure less than a straightforward referendum (not to mention that more than half of the eligible voting populace didn’t even bother to vote), but it’s still hard to stick earrings on this particular pig.
