Regime Change in the Bluegrass?
Unless things turn around (likely a Final Four appearance) this is probably John Calipari’s last season at Kentucky:
Kentucky’s problems on the basketball court are far from fixed. “This one, I don’t know if I wanna watch the tape,” UK Coach John Calipari said as he settled into his seat at the postgame press conference Saturday afternoon. It won’t make for pleasant viewing. Calipari’s Cats had just been embarrassed by No. 7-ranked Alabama to the tune of a 78-52 final margin. The Tide’s lead never narrowed below 20 points over the final 12 and a half minutes of the game. The box score was a horror show, and it was backed up by the play on the court.
It’s been a long time since the 2014-15 team that went 38-1, much less the 2011-12 national champion. The last two seasons have been simply dreadful, with the loss in the first round of last year’s tourney cementing the sense of disquiet that has overtaken the program in recent years. Basketball is, as you might imagine, rather a big deal in Kentucky. The program has certainly produced some memorable and remarkable players, but Calipari increasingly seems at a loss about how to turn talent into victories at the college level. Not at all clear who might replace him, assuming that the end is near.
