I Made the TikTok Cinnamon Rolls

When my in-laws were visiting they made breakfast one morning. It was the viral TikTok cinnamon rolls. Correction: it was a version of the viral TikTok cinnamon rolls. There are several, apparently.

One thing they all seem to have in common is heavy cream, extra cinnamon, brown sugar and butter. To tl/dr this for you: Basically all you do is assemble cinnamon rolls from the refrigerator section in a greased pan, fill the pan roughly halfway up with heavy cream, then top the rolls with a brown sugar/butter/cinnamon/salt mixture.

When I read the recipes, I feared the rolls would turn out too rich and/or too sweet. But miraculously they didn’t. They just offer more of what you’re always left wanting more of from cinnamon rolls–gooey, sticky sweet cinnamon-y-ness.

The version my in-laws made used–and this is required of this particular version–Wal-Mart brand cinnamon rolls. These rolls are small and hold their shape, moreso than than in the version I made, using Pillsbury brand. I enjoyed the pillowy softness of the Pillsbury version, but preferred the flavor of the Wal-Mart brand. I will probably use them when I can.

In the version my in-laws made, the butter and sugar was simply mixed together. In my version, I made I essentially made a caramel, by stirring them over med-high heat ’til the mixture got thick and bubbly. I recommend using my method. I think it adds an extra element of luxe to the rolls.

I’m usually pretty skeptical about viral recipes, but I think this one lives up to the hype. It takes mere minutes to transform a can of ho-hum rolls into something pretty delicious.
