A burning dumpster

To be clear: Twitter was never great at moderating bigotry and harassment, even after it finally responded to the Gamergate disaster. I would describe the pre-muskian moderation policy as Fake Civility. People who knew how to avoid obviously bigoted language could get away with all sorts of vileness AND whine to moderators when people they were harassing replied with language moderators deemed uncivil. But Sloe Munk decided to make things much better for the bigots and worse for their targets, trumpeted his intent to do so, and voila

New Twitter owner Elon Musk declared last month that “hate speech impressions” had dramatically fallen on the platform since he took over.

He was lying about a drop in hate speech “impressions” on the platform less than a month after he took control of the company.

It was a remarkable claim, given that Musk has executed mass layoffs and chased away hundreds of employees, draining the company of much-needed resources to enforce content moderation policies, which the billionaire has also publicly criticized.

[…]

Specifically, the Center for Countering Digital Hate said the daily use of the n-word under Musk is triple the 2022 average and the use of slurs against gay men and trans persons are up 58% and 62%, respectively.

And the Anti-Defamation League said in a separate report that its data shows “both an increase in antisemitic content on the platform and a decrease in the moderation of antisemitic posts.”

As the article notes, he doesn’t have the staff to stem the tide. But he doesn’t have the staff because he didn’t want anyone to spoil his shitty fans’ fun.

People who post off-topic comments are annoying little dingleberries.
