Come get some Scottmentum! Or should it be Timentum?
It’s that time in the presidential election cycle again! That magical time when Very Serious People pretend the GOP is willing or able to nominate anyone except a cishet Christian or Christianish white man for the presidency.
There was a time when this farce made me angry. Everyone who is old enough to vote knows the Republican Party is the party of carefully nurtured racism. (And any other form of bigotry you care to name. And likely some forms still awaiting classification.)
So this charade, which always leads to dickheads getting the mads or the sads when someone makes the completely reasonable observation that the GOP is a white supremacist cesspit, is a deliberate middle finger from the party that perpetually has the n-word quivering on its collective lips.
But after a few repetitions I realized it’s an attempt to pull a fast one, minus the fast one. That the only people who don’t know everyone else knows they’re full of shit are the people attempting to perpetuate the charade. It is incredibly inept and I can’t get angry about something that is impossible to take seriously.
That’s why this humdinger from Politico is as funny as two stumble drunks try climb a chain link fence: Trump who? GOP senators rave over a potential Tim Scott presidential run.
They’re raving all right. No one believes the GOP wants a Black president, not even the people quoted in the article. In fact, this article unintentionally performs a public service because anyone who claims Ernst, Barrasso, Graham etc are sincere is a massive jackass too.
Scott’s not personally chatty about the prospect of a 2024 presidential run, declining to talk and directing questions to his staff.
So the senator that Republicans are excited to see run hasn’t said he’s running, but the state of political reporting at national outlets is a very sorry state indeed, so articles like this are allowed to waft their stupidity all over the public.
And if you want to know what Scott’s staff have to say about whether he’ll run you’ll need to ask them yourself. Either the reporter forgot to ask his staff, or they did ask but somehow the answer didn’t run in the article or they received an answer that didn’t bolster the Scottmentum! narrative and dropped almost the whole thing. Except the bit of the sentence that brought it up in the first place.
Any error would be bad, but the latter would be the very worst. So I assume that’s what happened. To add to the fun whoever edited the article didn’t notice the lack of follow up, or didn’t care because the narrative du jour demands Scottmentum! Again, the worst scenario is the safe bet.
The South Carolinian carved out a unique lane in the GOP, well-liked by mainstream leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell but never publicly at odds with Trump world, even when he’s offered halted criticism of the former president.
??? Is “halted criticism” a thing that the youths are saying, and if so could someone translate? Or should it be hated? No wait, heated. What in the hell is going on over there? The time stamp on this thing is 4:30 am, 12/12/22, but apparently no one at Tiger Beat on Tiber Creek has taken a second look at it.
Can’t say I blame them.
The article continues:
And as the only Black Republican senator, he’d offer his party a compelling chance to build on its long-running effort to boost diverse candidate recruitment by further appealing to Democratic-leaning constituencies.
“Sure the Democrats have had several Black senators including one who went on to become President and another Vice President. But right now the GOP has one Black senator. So … uh. His rarity value? Is sure to finally attract Black voters who steadfastly refuse to fall for this insulting malarkey. And the sort of ‘Independent’ white voters who always vote Republican for any office higher than mayor anyway. And underpants. And profit!”
Yep. People are rushing headlong into utter incomprehensibility for the sake of a “joke” that was stale before the GOP put the Big Orange Racist in the White House. But they can’t leave it because the urge to go “Hur hur hur this time for sure the GOP will stop being racist WINK!” is too strong.
The article sprawls around a bit. It becomes a general “Will they/won’t they?” now that the Shouting Scrotum has declared he’ll run thing, because we’re also supposed to pretend Republicans won’t show their soft white underbellies when Glump gives them a dirty look. Then there are some more words from Republican senators (all white, natch) who pretend they don’t hate the thought of a potential Scott candidacy in the mistaken belief they can point to quotes in this article as proof they can’t be racist because they have a Black friend.
Ho hum.
