Why did Democratic donors spend so much money on hopeless candidates in Florida?
I don’t know if it’s denial about how red the state has gotten over the last 6 years, or how many Beltway swells have positive feelings about that godforsaken state, but I genuinely do not get why these no-hope races in Florida were such a major priority for Dem donors this cycle:
Democrat donors gave Val Demings $72 million to lose to Marco Rubio by 15 points. Mandela Barnes is on track to lose by ONE point to Ron Johnson and was allowed to get swamped on the airwaves in Sept. and Oct. due to lack of money. Just something to think about.— Justin (@jdabre11) November 9, 2022
I’m not saying Barnes necessarily would have won with a bigger push. But is seems pretty obvious that the Senate race in the state Biden carried in 2020 and that an incumbent Dem governor won again should have been a much bigger priority than the hundred-to-one longshot in a state with a bunch of expensive media markets. Democrats don’t need to permanently give up on Trumpland, but until we see otherwise absolutely every remotely winnable statewide race should be prioritized instead going forward.
