Surprise! It’s Not A Tiny Homunculus!
The Guardian has done a tremendous service by publishing photos of what they call “pregnancy tissue” at the various stages of development represented by the repressive laws that misogynistic state legislatures are passing.
Most of the photos are of “pregnancy tissue” that includes the gestational sac, which will become the amniotic sac, which holds the fetus in fluid, and the fetus itself, too small to be easily seen within the sac. The photo at the top of this post is of gestational sacs from five weeks through nine weeks of pregnancy, starting at the lower left and going counterclockwise.
Patients may come in for an abortion fearful at this stage, having read through forums or looked at images online. “They’re expecting to see a little fetus with hands – a developed, miniature baby.” Often, she says, “they feel they’ve been deceived.”
I have to admit that I have that kind of picture in my head too even though I know it’s not the case until much later in pregnancy. I’ve been looking for this kind of picture, and The Guardian came though for me. Lots more photos at the link.
