Handout photo issued by Just Stop Oil of two protesters who have thrown tinned soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s famous 1888 work Sunflowers at the National Gallery in London, Friday Oct. 14, 2022. The group Just Stop Oil, which wants the British government to halt new oil and gas projects, said activists dumped two cans of Heinz tomato soup over the oil painting on Friday. London’s Metropolitan Police said officers arrested two people on suspicion of criminal damage and aggravated trespass. (Just Stop Oil via AP)

Is throwing tomato soup at protected paintings or gluing yourself to them to protest climate change an effective political action? I mean, probably not. But on the other hand, no one outraged by doing this is actually doing anything to save the planet and ensure that their children don’t grow up and die in a hellscape of a burnt crisp of a planet. I don’t particularly see how this leads to anything effective, but in a situation where there feels like no other options, I can’t condemn this either. I mean, they aren’t actually damaging the paintings and those are conscious choices. These kids are trying to do something–anything!–and they are choosing paintings with glass in front of them. What do you want them to do if not this?

Anyone who does condemn these actions needs to be able to say what they are doing to fight climate change. And voting for Democrats is not fighting climate change, though it’s obviously a verrrry small piece of the puzzle given the state of the Republican Party.
