Republicans do not want the question of abortion rights to be decided democratically
Michigan Republicans are trying to keep an abortion rights imitative that got nearly a million signatures off the ballot for farcical reasons:
@mireprofreedom gathered almost ONE MILLION signatures on petitions to get this on the ballot. they collected a *record breaking* number of signatures.— Leah Litman (@LeahLitman) September 1, 2022
This is — to put it lightly — a ridiculous argument that does not even come close to justifying a decision to keep the ballot initiative off the ballot, and to justify disenfranchising the *NEARLY ONE MILLION MICHIGANDERS* who signed petitions to get this on the ballot.— Leah Litman (@LeahLitman) September 1, 2022
@ProfMMurray @kateashaw1 & I wrote @PostEverything @washingtonpost about how the attack on reproductive rights is possible and enabled bc of the attack on voting rights (gerrymandering, voter dilution, voter suppression, & more): https://t.co/B01QiKKFy3— Leah Litman (@LeahLitman) September 1, 2022
Because Michigan doesn’t have Republican-controlled courts the measure will probably be restored, but that’s not the point. What should be clear is that Republicans will do anything they can to cut the public out of abortion policy, because they know that in most jurisdictions their views are horribly unpopular. A situation where Michigan women are terrorized by an archaic law passed before the 19th Amendment and kept in place by an unaccountable Republican legislature is the Republican dream. And this is why atrocities like Shelby County and Rucho preceded Dobbs.
