Look, although I personally favor mask mandates on mass transit, seeing how they provide public health benefits for little cost, I don’t think at this late date that making a de facto masks-optional policy de jure is going to have any material effect, and I’m sympathetic to the idea that keeping totally unenforced and mostly unobserved rules on the books is a net negative. But the middle two figures on the right panel — winking at people who wear masks improperly — have no conceivable purpose but to troll people who ever gave a shit. I have no idea what this is supposed to accomplish, except that to establish that even blue state elites have abandoned even making gestures of solidarity at this point.
