Suborning the Secret Service would be attractive to Donald Trump. The palace guard. And their bosses at the Department of Homeland Security. It’s coming out in bits and pieces. President Joe Biden is aware of the danger. He changed out a number of agents on White House duty when he came into office, and this week he appointed Kim Cheatle to be the director while the investigations play out. She’s the second woman to be director and does not have to be confirmed by the Senate.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has obtained documents under the Freedom of Information Act pertaining to the Secret Service’s role in the January 6 insurrection and released a couple of tidbits recently.
The Secret Service knew of a threat to Nancy Pelosi on January 6th days before the insurrection, but did not pass it along until hours after the Capitol had been breached, according to Secret Service emails obtained by CREW. (link)
In the days before the January 6 attack on the Capitol, documents exchanged between the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies outlined “threats of violence” on the 6th, coming “predominantly from right wing groups” with “plans to bring weapons into the District,” according to documents obtained by CREW. The Secret Service knew that Trump’s supporters would be demonstrating around Freedom Plaza and the Capitol with the intent to cause violence, but the agency does not appear to have taken the threat seriously. The phones of several top Trump-era Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] officials were deactivated when they left their positions and the data contained on them likely wiped, a court filing released late last week shows. (link)
