Hoist by their own pseudo-scandal
This is a point that really hasn’t been made enough:
“As follow-through on his campaign promise to ‘lock up’ Hillary Clinton, Trump signed a law in 2018 stiffening penalties for improper removal of classified documents — from one year in jail to five years, turning it into a felony offense.” https://t.co/feLdyjyteE— Garance Franke-Ruta (@thegarance) August 10, 2022
Republicans spent two years they spent pretending to care about Hillary’s compliance with information security best practices, and were able to sucker/coopt enough of the media to ride this snipe hunt right into the White House. But rather than just drop it once it achieved its intended purpose, they began to convince themselves of their own bullshit and made the mishandling of classified documents a much more serious criminal offense.
And now, since Trump is actually the extraordinarily corrupt figure they tried to convince themselves that Clinton was, they are having to argue that even investigating violations of the law they themselves created is completely improper. I myself don’t think that making the improper handling of classified material a felony makes much sense, but wasn’t some Democrat Party conspiracy. It was Republicans who put their god in the jam he now finds himself in.
