When Do the Assassinations Start?
I’m honestly surprised that we haven’t seen assassinations yet given the rise of far-right political violence. And considering how little difference the near-lynching of Mike Pence has made, it’s hard to see that an actual assassination of a left-wing politician who do anything to bring the Republican Party back from the brink. We damn near saw that happen last night:
An armed man who reportedly threatened to kill Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) outside her Seattle home Saturday was arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime, police said.
On Saturday night, Jayapal called 911 to report someone outside her home using obscene language and who may have fired a pellet gun, according to a probable cause statement from Seattle police obtained by King 5 News.
According to the statement, police found outside a 48-year-old man Jayapal’s home who was “standing in the middle of the street with his hands in the air” and a .40-caliber Glock 22 handgun holstered on his waist.
A neighbor told police she heard the suspect yell something like “Go back to India, I’m going to kill you” and that she had seen the suspect drive by Jayapal’s house three times while yelling profanities, according to the statement.
Maybe this is a crazy person, but that doesn’t make much difference here, crazy people can kill in the name of far-right causes too. It is very likely to happen to someone at some point here. We’ll see if it leads to anything changing.
Incidentally, Jayapal’s book is very good and you should read it.
