Situation doesn’t sound great for Abe, who apparently went into cardiac arrest after the attack. Shooter reportedly used a homemade weapon, although this detail is subject to update. Abe is a consequential and controversial figure in the recent history of Japan, leading the drive to re-armament and also having ties to the most problematic strains of Japanese nationalism.
