The silent era was brilliant for movie comedy. By the late 30s, another great era of movie comedy was well underway. But the early talkies? That was kind of a rough era as people had to figure out what would work in a talking movie. You know what does not work? Million Dollar Legs, the 1932 Edward F. Cline film starring W.C. Fields as president of a made up nation where power is based on athletic prowess, a young American salesman falls in love with his daughter, and he takes the nation to its first Olympics to win her hand. It’s extremely dumb and no joke is too bad that it can’t go on for 3 minutes. Maybe this kind of thing appeals to some of you. It does not to me.
