Not knowing Russian I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the translation, but it’s been out there now for several hours so I assume it’s basically sound.
If you’ve never read this now 27-year-old essay by Umberto Eco, please do. I read it when it originally came out in the NYRB, and I remember thinking at the time how interesting history can be. It’s not just history any more.
