Populism people hate

Batya Ungar-Sargon, Deputy Editor of the opinion section that published an op-ed by seditionist asserting that Kamala Harris isn’t an American citizen and new hero of Bari Weiss’s ShakeShack for liberalism-left-me-ing about how intolerable it is that Democrats think that completely banal vaccination requirements should include the safe and effective COVID vaccines. Needless to say, she’s a big fan of the Tonka Twuck protests, leading to some hilarious results:
To state the obvious, Trudeau’s approval ratings tell us jack shit about how people feel about the anti-vaxx protestors, particularly since Trudeau’s response up until yesterday had been to defer to local law enforcement. To infer that “Canadians” in general support the anti-vaxxers from this would be crazy.
But wait, it gets better. We don’t have to infer what Canadians think about the anti-vaxx shitheads playing with their Hot Wheels — the data is right in the (pro-anti-vaxx) editorial she links to!
Meanwhile, panellists in the Maru poll had little sympathy for those participating in the vaccine mandate protests, with 64% saying they believe democracy is threatened by the demonstrations, which should end immediately.
Only 20% fully support the demonstrators.
Finally, 58% believe truckers participating in the protests who refuse to disperse should face fines and potential jail terms of up to two years, while 66% said anyone aiding and abetting the protests should be subject to the same penalties.
So, the truckers are opposed by 4-to-5 margins — not surprising, since vaccine mandates are popular among Canadians — and a majority think they should face jail time if they fail to disperse. Does Bari Worse just ignore this? Even better:
Ah, yes, the twuckers don’t have BLANKET support, in the same sense that Urban Meyer doesn’t have blanket support among fans of the Michigan Wolverines. Very convincing!
Anyway, this is what right-wing “populism” has always meant — not that the government should generally represent majority preferences, it’s that governments are obligated to center the views of angry, reactionary white men whether anybody else agrees with them or not and even if their parties can’t win fair elections.
