This latter belief requires overlooking that Trump has both the strategic imagination and emotional impulse control of a toddler. He’s doing this because at the moment he has an emotional hunger to be credited for developing the vaccines — a lot of people are saying he personally came up with the technology — plus on some feral level he realizes that it just doesn’t matter what he says about this or any other subject, in terms of either getting the GOP nomination or winning the general election.
Of course plenty of Reasonable Centrists ™ have already forgotten that Trump went out of his way to hide that he himself had gotten vaccinated, as he talked up various bogus alternative treatments. Their narrative will now be that at least Trump is much more sensible about this than Marjorie Taylor Greene, just as Joseph Paul Goebbels was a lot more suave than Julius Streicher.
