Chalk up Nebraska as another state where Republicans are set on destroying the state’s excellent public research university because it’s not a Republican propaganda factory:
When I moved to Nebraska in 2007, the university was universally beloved. In fact, I used to tell my colleagues in other states how nice it was to live in a place where everyone loved the university because everyone had some sort of personal connection to it.— Ari Kohen (@kohenari) November 29, 2021
The university hasn’t changed. The people haven’t changed. What happened was a coordinated campaign against higher education and against public education in general. Pete Ricketts, Steve Erdman, Steve Halloran, and Mike Groene are the face of it in Nebraska.— Ari Kohen (@kohenari) November 29, 2021
At this point, they’re blithely saying these nonsensical things directly. Mike Groene has said, from the floor of the Nebraska legislature, that the university is stealing Nebraskans’ kids. Erdman and Halloran keep saying that the university isn’t a safe space for conservatives.— Ari Kohen (@kohenari) November 29, 2021
Tenure is going to essentially disappear in public universities in Republican-controlled states in the next decade or two. None of this will ever be mentioned in any ShakeShack touting the University of Austin.
