These are the graves of Joseph Stewart and Scipio.

I have almost nothing to say about these two people because they were both slaves. Basically, the entire information on them is on this historical marker. Stewart was a house slave in the Fenimore Cooper family and maybe Scipio was too since he has a marker.

Basically, the point of this post is to remember that there are slave graves anywhere and we do not know anything about them. The vast majority are unmarked. And yet they lived lives that we need to remember in whatever way we can.

Joseph Stewart and Scipio are buried in Christ Churchyard, Cooperstown, New York.

If you would like this series to visit other slaves, well, it’s kind of hard since the vast majority are unmarked, but you can donate to cover the required expenses here. I am happy to visit slave graveyards and at least mark their existence so we can talk about this. Previous posts in this series are archived here.
