NFL Open Thread: You’ve been Gase’d!
Sam Darnold is getting the bump that comes from leaving the clutches of QUARTERBACK GURU Adam Gase:
I regret to inform you—this is not a joke—that Adam Gase’s Michigan high school, Marshall, won the state title in the first season after his 1996 graduation.— Kevin Clark (@bykevinclark) September 24, 2021
To be clear, Darnold is almost certainly going to come down to Earth to some degree — the Panthers have played a weak schedule and he’s been mostly throwing from favorable game situations. But if he even becomes a competent game manager who can win with a good team that’s a massive improvement over the sub-replacement-level work he was doing with Gase. And there are very specific reasons why his coaching style sets young QBs up to fail (and works for veterans only if they’re long-established first ballot Hall of Famers who call their entire games themselves from the line of scrimmage.) Someday someone will do a good deep dive into how he became the hottest coaching prospect in the league for no conceivable reason.
