Another triumph for the intellectual dark web
In addition to outright MAGA “GIVE ME MUH HORSE MEDICINE!!!!!” grunts, it’s not hard to find Matt Taibbi-like anti-anti-ivermecitin-shilling arguments:
Leaving aside the subtle (and perhaps unintentional) implicit anti-vaxxism of likening a proven safe and effective vaccine to a treatment there’s no reason to believe has any efficacy at treating COVID whatsoever, there’s the nagging problem that 1)taking ivermectin, especially without medical supervision, can have bad side effects including poisoning, and 2)your “personal medical choices” do in fact affect others not least because medical resources are scarce:
A rural Oklahoma doctor said patients who are taking the horse de-wormer medication, ivermectin, to fight COVID-19 are causing emergency room and ambulance back ups.
“There’s a reason you have to have a doctor to get a prescription for this stuff, because it can be dangerous,” said Dr. Jason McElyea.
Dr. McElyea said patients are packing his eastern and southeastern Oklahoma hospitals after taking ivermectin doses meant for a full-sized horse, because they believed false claims the horse de-wormer could fight COVID-19.
“The ERs are so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting to facilities where they can get definitive care and be treated,” he said.
People should get vaccinated and should not use veterinary anti-parasite medications to treat viruses, playing pattycake with anti-vaxx cranks is very pernicious and dangerous, and it’s amazing these things even have to be said but that’s America in 2021 for you.
