Paul and I were fortunate enough to be able to talk to Adam Serwer about his stunningly good new essay collection, The Cruelty is the Point. It’s a book that simply overflows with illuminations and sharp insights, succeeding in both putting into the historical record what the Trump administration was and noting in careful, analytical detail its deep historical roots, with a particular focus on Reconstruction and the violent backlash it engendered. Many you will have read some of these essays before, but in addition to a lot of excellent new material the essays gain power from cumuliation.
