Disliking “Friends” is not a substitute for a personality

Hello, old friends. I just popped into say that I find that since the “Friends” reunion special, the Discourse surrounding it has been bad.

“Friends” was good. I haven’t watched it in years, but when I see the occasional snippet from the show I’m surprised by how well it has aged. (Actually, a lot of the sitcoms from the Golden Age of NBC’s 90’s sitcoms hold up really well. It’s weird.)

Some people have pointed out that the cast lacked diversity. Boy howdy, it did. A lot of casts did then. That’s not good. I imagine a reboot would correct this. (I am not angling for a reboot. While I enjoyed the show during its heyday, I’m done with it.)

I guess Ross is really problematic now for reasons I haven’t quite nailed down. The thing I most remember about the show is that Rachel seemed pretty spoiled…throughout its run. Plus, you know, they were on a break.

Let me PIVOT here to say that it’s perfectly fine to dislike “Friends.” I dislike lots of things. I just try not do it in a way that feels like a mating dance.

Loudly and performatively disliking “Friends” has the same energy as making jokes about Nickelback, something that was hardly fresh or exciting even when it was topical.

Unironically liking “Friends” is now officially much more transgressive than disliking it.

I won’t be reading comments, which will be–to a person–“I never liked the show.” and “I never watched a single episode.”
