A wingnut for all seasons
Mark Joseph Stern has a good thread on how absolutely insane Roger Benitez’s opinion striking down California’s assault weapons ban is:
The portion of Benitez’s opinion blithely trivializing the unique trauma of gunshot wounds from assault weapons is particularly nauseating. https://t.co/DrBbi1C4pw pic.twitter.com/P0xqsm9og8— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) June 7, 2021
Then there is this perverse section, in which Benitez scolds California for maintaining its assault weapons ban when large-capacity magazine bans are allegedly more effective.
California passed a large-capacity magazine ban, and Benitez blocked it. https://t.co/D0l6YnmGJB pic.twitter.com/Q03Vy8c6qY— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) June 7, 2021
Benitez insists that “citizen militias are not irrelevant,” citing the experiences of … Fidel Castro, Ho Chi Minh, and the Taliban. https://t.co/e7ArsDmeim pic.twitter.com/dwMD0JoOQi— Mark Joseph Stern (@mjs_DC) June 7, 2021
Hack Republican judge: “your ban on assault weapons is unconstitutional because, uh, a ban on large capacity magazines would be more effective.”
CA: “Ok, we’ll ban large capacity magazines.”
HRJ: “No. Besides, if you’re REALLY worried about mass killings, you would be banning the deadly COVID vaccine!”
Fox News brain is a deeply debilitating condition. Note too that Benitez is a George W. Bush appointee — this is just what a generic Republican “judge” looks like now.
