When You Measure, Include the Measurer

Science is never pure, something outside of human society. It is absolutely 100% affected by the biases and experiences of the scientist and that most definitely includes the racism of people who live in a racist society such as the United States.

And who is here to push forward this point this evening but one MC Hammer.

I await more comments handwaving away phrenology as something that wasn’t “real” science because its inconvenient or people saying that the science they practice can’t be impacted by racism or society because of reasons.

As it turns out, Hammer is quite fluent in Foucault, Science Studies, and other key philosophical texts that take science out of its pretend pure existence and place it right where it belongs–as a largely socially constructed set of findings.
