What explains MAGA

My colleague Chris Parker has conducted a comprehensive national survey of MAGA supporters with Rachel Blum of the University of Oklahoma. It provides a lot of useful data, and is yet another blow against Economic Anxiety as the primary explanation for Trumpism:

It’s not that the economic stresses of the middle-class people who showed up on 1/6, say, aren’t real, it’s just that they’re too ubiquitous to be a useful explanation for anything. Plenty of people across the political spectrum have a lot of credit card or student debt and/or tax bills. Some of these anxieties can be addressed with progressive policy and some can’t, but alleviating them isn’t going to make Trumpism suddenly go away.
