Today’s spectacle

Donald Trump devastated the Republican party at the national level, which lost control of all three elected branches of the federal government during his presidency, and lost them directly and unambiguously because of Trump’s disastrous behavior, both in office and on the campaign trail.
For this, he will be rewarded today with a show of groveling fealty by the very people whose political fortunes he has at least temporarily shattered: Republican members of the House and Senate. The overwhelming majority of Republican members of Congress are going to embrace Donald Trump’s lies and delusions about how he supposedly won re-election, even though the overwhelming majority of those people are perfectly well aware that they are voting to ratify a crazy conspiracy theory, mongered by a man who is in every respect the worst person to ever occupy the office which he is going to be apparently literally dragged out of two weeks from today.
That is how low this party has sunk, and the descent is clearly far from over.
