Margo St. James, RIP
The issue of sex work is complicated one, but the absolute principle needs to be that sex workers have rights and those rights need to be respected. But if your work is criminalized, you have no rights at all. And that means workers die. Few did more to fight against the criminalization of sex work than Margo St. James, founder of COYOTE and who established a free health clinic for Bay Area sex workers. She has died at the age of 83. She should be remembered as one of the freedom fighters of the late 20th century. And if she didn’t live to see her struggle turn into victory, well, you can say that about a lot of the activists who changed the world.
