LGM Podcast: Freedom From the Market
For my latest author podcast, I was very happy to talk to Mike Konczal, economist and frequent writer on economic justice issues, about his new book Freedom from the Market: America’s Fight to Liberate Itself from the Grip of the Invisible Hand, published just this week by The New Press. The book explores the history of all the ways Americans have demanded and won freedom from market domination, going from the Homestead Act to Social Security to today’s demands for free college and Medicare for All. We discuss these issues, focus on a few historical figures you probably don’t know, and discuss how the neoliberal emphasis on market supremacy has done so much damage to the world and closed off even the language that we can ignore the idea of the “market,” which is so often talked about as a natural focus like gravity instead of something created and supported by government.
