Murphy’s role here is supposed to be entirely ministerial: if there’s an “apparent winner” of the presidential election, then the relevant statute requires her to authorize the transition process.

This is another example of how bureaucratic rationality depends on having minimally honest people in positions of authority.

BTW, this is why people who have chosen voluntarily to have anything to do with the Trump administration should be treated as pariahs for the rest of their lives. This excludes career people who found themselves in the midst of an authoritarian nightmare. But if you signed up for this, too bad so sad, you can wear that scarlet T for the rest of your life.
