The Great Give Up
Great leadership here Democrats:
Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday he should not have attended a fancy dinner party honoring a top political adviser, which occurred during California’s coronavirus surge and just as the governor is trying to discourage households from gathering for the holidays.
The Democratic governor, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and people from several other households gathered outside this month at The French Laundry to celebrate the 50th birthday of lobbyist Jason Kinney, a longtime friend. The dinner at one of the world’s most exclusive restaurants was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
While Newsom’s office said the outdoor meal hewed to protocols, the governor conceded that he erred in joining the gathering.
“While the First Partner and I followed the restaurant’s health protocols and took safety precautions, I should have modeled better behavior and not joined the dinner,” Newsom said in a statement.
And then there’s House Democrats:
House Dem and GOP leaders are holding respective dinners for new members.
.@SpeakerPelosi told me it’s safe. “It’s very spaced,” she said and there is enhanced ventilation and the Capitol physician signed off. pic.twitter.com/ZXjf72lnrP

The dinner has since been changed.
New Mexico and Oregon are going back toward lockdowns. I wonder if they will work. As Thanksgiving approaches, it just seems that everyone is giving up on bothering. If anything, and I know this sounds bad, the virus simply hasn’t proven deadly enough to everyday people to convince people to change their behavior. Sure, it kills other people and that might include Grandma, but it doesn’t kill me. Or at least this seems to be how people are acting. That Trump and Republicans have shown utter indifference to people’s lives is horrifying and predictable. That this did not hurt Republicans one bit in the elections, especially at the state level where Republicans did quite well, shows that they are representing their voters, not going against them. So there’s plenty of people to blame before you get to Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi. But it sure as hell doesn’t help. It undermines whatever moral authority Democrats have on it. And moreover, it just demonstrates that most people are just done with, even as ridiculously high new records for infections are hit every day and there’s little reason to think we won’t hit 2,000 deaths a day here in a few weeks.
Good job America. Good job.
