Soumitra Chatterjee, RIP
It’s remarkable how many of the all time great directors have that one actor (or sometimes a few) that they work with again and again and again, making careers together. For Kurosawa, it was Toshiro Mifune. For Bergman, it was the whole company of Max Von Sydow and Bibi Andersson and Harriet Andersson and Gunnar Bjornstrund and then later Liv Ullman and Erland Josephson. For Scorsese, it’s DeNiro and then DiCaprio. Etc; there are lots of other examples of this.
Well, for the great Satyajit Ray, it was Soumitra Chatterjee, the star of the astounding Apu Trilogy and then another 11 or so movies. He has now died of COVID-19. Terrible. Just terrible.
