2016 was basically a chance for Republicans to play in easy mode: for some reason the media’s elite editors decided that they were obligated to pretend to care about anything Republicans pretended to care about, and if you investigated something about he Democratic candidate and didn’t find anything it was important to write it up as if you had anyway. But in this cycle, you need actual misconduct to get any traction, and so “we had Biden but the dog ate our hard drive” was where this was bound to end up.
