Lisa Blatt thinks it’s OK for Brett Kavanaugh to rape five women if he promotes one of them
You may remember Lisa Blatt from such op-eds as “Brett Kavanaugh is just an awesome guy and super nice to women as far as I know, so as a liberal feminist I implore people to support his nomination.”
You may also remember that at the time she was the head of appellate practice at Arnold & Porter, a tony DC-based law firm — Abe Fortas was a founding partner — that argues cases before the Supreme Court from time to time, so her spontaneous effusion on the total wonderfulness of prospective Justice Kavanaugh featured a massive conflict of interest, which Blatt did not acknowledge let alone address.
The world being what it is, Blatt was rewarded for plying her trade in the pages of Politico on behalf of Leonard Leo’s best boy with an even better job, as these things are measured: the head of appellate practice at Williams & Connolly, widely considered the top appellate litigation firm in the business.
W&C is, I’m told, a very proper place in a number of ways, so I wonder what they’ll think of this?
The world being what it is, I realize it’s necessary in this context to point out that Hannah Mullen is a young legal superstar: a granddaughter of John Paul Stevens with a solid gold resume, who is or was being groomed for one of the top slots in the corporation.
That’s not all she is though:
Mullen is right: she took a risk by confronting someone like Blatt in a semi-public setting, and she’s taking a bigger one by calling her out on Twitter. The corporation doesn’t like this kind of thing, for obvious reasons. Delicacy and circumspection are valued nearly as much as the impeccable pedigree of someone like Mullen, who will or would have gone straight to the top as long as she learns eventually to keep her mouth shut and smile winningly at the right men at the right time.
But some women you just can’t reach.
Anyway, I’ll be writing a short and sweet letter to R. Hackney Wiegmann, Williams & Connolly’s Managing Partner, asking him if his firm is A-OK with the top lawyer in its most prominent practice area publicly advocating tolerance of rape to a sexual assault survivor as a job strategy for career gals. (And Lisa, honey, please don’t try the I was drinking defense. You too may like beer, but in vino veritas and res ipsa loquitur are both mottos of our ancient profession).
If you’re reading this and happen to be a member of a bar, or for that matter just a concerned citizen, I encourage you to think of creative ways by which you might help this matter retain some continuing salience to Williams & Connolly, a Limited Liability Partnership.
