On a classic episode of The Larry Sanders Show, bumbling sidekick Hank Kingsley has to serve as guest host after Larry gets sick. He’s nervous and humble, and it goes well. He then plots to get a second guest hosting gig, comes out fully arrogant, and bombs. “When you act like an asshole,” observes producer Artie after the disaster, “people tend to think of you as an asshole.”
Trump has never gotten that lesson, and he’s finally in a context where it’s not working out for him:
By overwhelming margins, voters in Pennsylvania and Florida were repelled by President Trump’s conduct in the first general election debate, according to New York Times/Siena College surveys, as Joseph R. Biden Jr. maintained a lead in the two largest battleground states.
Over all, Mr. Biden led by seven percentage points, 49 percent to 42 percent, among likely voters in Pennsylvania. He led by a similar margin, 47-42, among likely voters in Florida.
The surveys began Wednesday, before the early Friday announcement that President Trump had contracted the coronavirus. There was modest evidence of a shift in favor of Mr. Biden in interviews on Friday, including in Arizona where a Times/Siena survey is in progress, after controlling for the demographic and political characteristics of the respondents.
The rats are already scouring for lifeboats.
More people have always hated Trump’s All-Asshole-All-The-Time personality — I was going to call it an “act” except that he’s not acting — than liked it. In an election in which few people took the possibility he could win seriously and running against a woman with some dubious political instincts of her own and openly despised by the political press, it was good enough to make the election close enough for the Slave Power’s presidential selection mechanism to steal it for him. Running against a generic white guy the political press mostly likes after he’s spent years fucking things up as badly as it’s possible for a president to fuck up, it’s not working — but he has no Plan B.
