The Working Class Whisperer
Here’s a classic entry for the “Mister Trump, Whom I Do Not Support” files:
I’ve spent about an hour trying to decide which of these four tweets is the worst. The last one is the obvious answer because it was an unscientific poll, but the second one is my choice, because of its take on why Trump is popular. pic.twitter.com/HqpkQHJqfH— Isaac Chotiner (@IChotiner) September 30, 2020
Of course, the actual data is that Trump is doing notably worse among the white working class than in 2016. But I’m sure Barkan (b. Brooklyn, BA Stony Brook, MA NYU) is right that white working class voters in the heartland will be deeply impressed by Trump’s performance last night. I mean, boasting about his Ivy League degree and calling anyone with a degree from a state school an idiot, mocking people with substance abuse problems, congratulating himself for not paying taxes, all while being a belligerent asshole — this is just what working class people are like.
