They’re so good at this:
Dennis Welch, political editor at 3TV/CBS 5, got ahold of an audio tape of Sen. Martha McSally making an appeal to supporters for donations in which McSally says, “We’re doing our part to catch up, you know, to get our message out. But it takes resources. So, anybody can give, I’m not ashamed to ask, to invest. If you can give a dollar, five dollars, if you can fast a meal and give what that would be.”
At a time when many Arizonans are struggling to put food on the table during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic, McSally is asking people to fast a meal and send her the money.
Definitely someone hearing the room! Her campaign assures us, however, that she was Only Joking:
A spokesman for her campaign told Welch, “This is a dumb non-story about a candidate making a joke on the stump.”
Dumb, yes.
A joke?
If so, no one is laughing.
There is indeed nothing in her delivery to suggest that she was joking, but even if she was it’s too bad because she is going to be looking for a new job starting in January and seems pretty clear that standup ain’t it.
Any Republican Senate candidate in Arizona would be in deep trouble this cycle, but nice of Arizona Republicans to run the southwestern Todd Akin just to be sure.
