More on this as the situation develops, but the US Navy may have just lost an amphibious assault ship (I call them light aircraft carriers, but whatever) to fire:

The USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) continued to burn after the sun had set in San Diego. It now appears that the fire has migrated to the ship’s island superstructure with its bridge seen engulfed in flames, which is a very bad thing. Additional large booms were also heard as the blaze continued to rage aboard some 14 hours after it started.

Commissioned in 1998, Bonhomme Richard was in the middle of her midlife refit. It’s hard to say right now, but the damage looks extremely extensive (there’s been some settling, so there’s also flooding) and it would not be at all surprising if she’s not returned to service. That will leave a bit of a hole in Navy force structure, although it seems unlikely that the Navy will reactivate either of the older Tarawa class amphibious assault ships that are still available in reserve. The expected service life of the Wasp class is between 35 and 50 years, depending on decisions about refit, and given the constraints on Navy shipbuilding it’s difficult to see how construction on her replacement could be meaningfully accelerated.
