A Few Words in Defense of Bill Barr
As I mentioned recently, a reader recently bought me a copy of Supreme Ambition from my wish list. About a third of the way through, and it is very good, and I’ll have multiple posts discussing it. Before we get to the main course, let me acknowledge the one good thing Bill Barr has ever done:
The only good thing I will say about Bill Barr is that he’s one of the key figures in GHWB’s DOJ who gave us Souter because Ken Starr wasn’t wingnutty enough pic.twitter.com/wXf1P0d67i— Scott Lemieux (@LemieuxLGM) January 20, 2020
As bad as things are, they would be much worse than that had Thornburgh and Barr not blackballed Ken Starr for not being wingnutty enough for the Supreme Court seat David Souter was ultimately selected for. Granting that Souter ended up being much more liberal than anyone could have been reasonably expected, that was one of the luckiest breaks American liberalism has received in the last few decades. Well, it was nice while it lasted.
