Talking about pop music

Slate conducted a poll of nineteen music industry people regarding the question of which pop songs of the last 25 years will echo through eternity (Yesterday I heard a girl who couldn’t have been much more than seven years old singing the chorus to Play That Funky Music White Boy, which just goes to show You Never Can Tell).

While perusing the list I discovered the following fact: of the 30 songs that made the cut, I knew eight of them.  I’m using “knew” in a rather strict sense here, meaning I could hum part of the song within three seconds after seeing the song’s name and the performer, i.e., essentially instant recognition, as opposed to ransacking the long term memory files.

In the interests of Science I then reviewed the top ten Billboard hits for every year when I was between the ages of 12 and 21.  (46 to 37 years ago. Good God).  Using the same strict recognition criteria, I recognized 95 of the 100 songs (For you MSU grads, that equals 95% of the sample).

In short, Joe Biden should definitely not run for president in 2020.
