- Ross could correctly blame misogyny for the shootings, but he won’t Douthat. No, instead he’ll hem and haw and clutch his pearls and talk about our modern libertine ways. The answer for Ross is always more repression. And it’s sad because there’s a nugget of a good point in his ramblings: our culture can be obnoxiously saturated with images of perfect couplehood and perfect romantic/sex lives. But the answer to that is to be more “libertine” about our attitudes towards the importance of sex and relationships, not more Victorian about sex. But, hey, why delve into all that when we can just blame Lena Dunham for everything?
