As I waited to the replay on the key call in tonight’s Yankees/Orioles game, it was pretty clear how it was going to come out, given that the first base umpire was Mr. Jerry “The Buffet At The Golden Corral Ain’t Getting Any Warmer” Meals. (Well, that, and the fact that I think Teixeira had actually gotten up and dusted himself off before the ball arrived.) How Meals continues to earn a paycheck for umpiring major league games remains a mystery.
Admittedly, since this involved 1)a Yankee loss and 2)an idiotic slide into first on a deeper level this call was morally and ethically justified.
