Midnight…
Anybody else think that Midnight in Paris was a little weak for its 92% rating? The chief insight is simultaneously rushed and painfully obvious, the in laws, the fiance, and the friends (with the exception of Michael Sheen) are cliche annoying instead of character annoying, Hemingway was a boring caricature, Bates didn’t have much to offer as Stein, etc. Paris was pretty, but I don’t think Allen filmed any part of the city that I didn’t see in a four day stay in 2003. Apart from the aforementioned Sheen (who was genuinely excellent as the annoying professor) and Tom Hiddleston as F. Scott Fitzgerald, I was left unimpressed.
