I’ll wager Mr. Brooks never really looked at the financial realities of a poor pregnant girl: would she be able to afford a procedure to terminate the pregnancy so it won’t interfere with her education? Would she have a doctor she could go to get RU-486 or Plan B? Is there even a women’s health clinic within a short bus ride of her home? Often city clinics turn patients away (as illustrated in the Columbus, Ohio episode of 30 Days). Would she be able to afford birth control pills if both her parents earn minimum wage? Did her school have a good health class, or was it just some string of substitutes in for a day at a time all semester long? Does she even have time to see a health professional if it’s her role to watch over the little siblings while mom works two different minimum-wage jobs?
