Ann Althouse‘s critique of Pajamas Media–the blog advertising and wingnut news aggregation company being run by Glenn Reynolds, Roger L. Simon, Charles Johnson, Assrocket, Hugh Hewitt, Chuck Norris and Johnny Carson’s third wife–is very entertaining indeed. One question I have, though, for those of you who know something about how internet ads work. Johnson claims that people who sign on would have veto power over the ads. Assuming that this is true, how would it work? After all, the business model is based on a flat advance fee to run the company’s ads. If you veto an ad, do they take away money (therefore making it not really a guaranteed payment?) If not, are you limited in the number of ads you can reject? If so, then you could still end up with ads that you don’t want, for aesthetic or political reasons. If not, then what’s to stop you from taking PM’s money, and then just vetoing all the ads so your site isn’t cluttered with pitches from the kind of company that would be willing to advertise on LGF? Anyway, this doesn’t exactly seem like, ah, the most carefully thought-through business model I’ve ever seen. (Maybe George Gilder is advising them behind the scenes…)
